Welcome to www.chesapeakes.org. The Chesapeake bay retriever is of American breeding. The Chesapeake is traced back to two dogs [thought to be Newfoundlands], rescued from a wrecked brig off the shores of Maryland in 1807. These were crossed with flat coated retrievers and curly coated retrievers. The chessie is a strong swimmer and widely used for hunting waterfowl in America. They are the duck hunter favorite. The coat is dense, oily and is colored in shades of lustrous gold. The Chesapeake has webbed feet and yellow or Amber eyes. Other breeds of dogs may also be found on this website.
